AWI Second Line (6)

A quick (and dodgy) snap of a few figures that have been lurking in a box for several years awaiting a unit to be recruited into. I gave them a quick wash with GW Devlan Mud and re-highlighted them. These will now mix into the Virginia militia as ex-continentals.

The next batch of 15 chaps in hunting shirts + civilian clothes have been block painted and will get their wash today. Hopefully they will be finished off tomorrow or on Monday evening.

After that I have another 16 similar figures to do, a few militia in shirtsleeves and some uniformed command figures. I also have a 6 pdr and limber to paint up along with a quick refresh/rebase of some old artillery crew figures.

I do also need to take a fresh look at my British Legion Cavalry, who at the very least need their bases bringing in-line with the rest of the collection. I don't want to do too much else to the unit as they are all conversions of Foundry Continental Light Dragoons, so are unique. Since these were done in 2001/2002 the Perrys have produced proper BL figures but I'll stick with the chaps with greenstuff hats :-)

Everything seems to be going OK to be ready for Salute, where our game will be GA 15. I also hope to make the game at Cannon on March 29th a dry run of Guilford Courthouse.

If I also do a game at Partizan on 31st May than I might go back to Camden 1780 as this was the battle I originally collected and painted for and it might be interesting to reflect on how much or little the collection/rules have changed and also on how much more popular the AWI now is a period compared to when I put on the demo at Salute 2002.

GCH Second Line (5)

Latest batch.
Back to work tomorrow so expect things to slow as I'll get 1hr max each evening to keep these ticking over.

GCH Second Line (4)

Latest batch of figures to add to the pot. I'm half way through now.
Once all the figures are done, they will be randomly divided into the units I need.

GCH Second Line (3)

I managed to get some painting done over the last couple of days.

Here are the first finished figures for the Virginia militia. This is about a third of what I have planned.

Miniature Wargames #383

I made it onto the cover this month, plus an article and a review inside. I need a rest now :-)

GCH Second line (2)

The first 32 figures have been block painted and their shading wash is just drying.

GCH Second Line (1)

My parcel arrived from Perry Miniatures.

So today I have prepped 90 figures, glued them to temporary bases and primed them.
Primer now drying overnight.

Begin the countdown to Salute...

Something old, something new

After a bit of a push today I finished off the militia that I will use for the first line at Guilford Courthouse. These are a mix of newly painted figures and some of those painted back in 2001/2.

I should be able to start work on the second line tomorrow...

Making progress

Well, work has been pretty busy for the last couple of months. However I have been cracking on with the plan to refresh my AWI militia in time for Salute. I have just about painted up (or re-touched) enough figures to re-do enough militia for the first-line at Guilford Courthouse.

For the second line I have new figures on order as many of the Virginia militia were dressed in hunting shirts according to a quote in "Long, Obstinate and Bloody", so those old Foundry minuteman figures will just not look the part. They will get reorganised into militia suitable for the northern campaigns (Boston, Saratoga, Philadelphia, etc).

This will give me three militia collections:
1. Shirtsleeves: which I will use for the Carolinas militia
2. Hunting shirts and civilian dress: for the Virginia militia
3. Civilian dress: for the New England militia

All units will have occasional figures in uniform to represent ex-continentals.

Today I have been putting together some rules ideas as an alternative to Black Powder. These draw largely from Fire & Fury, C.F.Wesencraft's rules and British Grenadier. They should be quite fast-play; a little slower than BP but a tad more "traditional" in some ways. Some playtesting on paper went well, although I had to tone down the artillery a bit.

I'll be putting on a game at Cannon in Retford at the end of March. Probably not the full Guilford CH, as I doubt all of the militia will be ready by then. I'm sure I will find something suitable though!
