1809 Campaign: 19th April at 11pm

Here is the situation at the close of play on the 19th April. Following the major battle at Abensberg, Napoleon has fallen back to the west to await the arrival of 2nd and 4th Corps. To the north, 7th Corps and substnatial parts of 3rd Corps are isolated from the rest of the army.

The Austrian army is re-gathering its strength at Abensberg. I and II Korps have finally reached Regensberg but are still some way away. The units who gained the famous victory over the Emperor are fatigued, but so are their opponents.

On the map, orange outlines indicate formations subject to attrition tests, while red outlines are for units who have double-attrition.

Both sides now have some difficult decisions to make...

  2. Wow - huge win for the Austrians and so early in the campaign. I'll be watching to see how this unfolds.

  3. Well...it is an embarassment for the French but they do have two relatively fresh corps en route and the Austrians have exhausted a large chunk of their army with I and II Korps still some way away and moving v slowly...it could all turn around.

  4. Even Bonaparte was impressed with III Corps in the 1809 Campaign at the outset. Davout was made a Marshal for a reason and that was made abundantly clear at Austerlitz (an amazing night forced march), Auerstadt, then again in the early stages of 1809. Then in 1812 with running both Vanguard and Rearguard.

The Austrians had every reason to be confident with their early plans. Too bad the rain and bumbling subordinates did them in.

  6. Are you using your "squares" rules for this or your "paintingshed" ones?
