Away from the wargame table for the working week I have managed to paint a test figure for the kitbashed cuirassiers and think it has com out looking quite smart:
Some parts will benefit from a coat of matt varnish and once the whole unit is painted there might be further finishing touches, but I think the paint scheme works and will fit into the Tattemberg forces. If feeling braver I might have shaved off the epaulettes but the risk of this going wrong feels quite high and I can reconcile myself with these being an elite unit and subject to the evolving military fashions of the 1770s and 1780s.
Reflecting on the game recently played to open up the campaign I really enjoyed myself. The first few turns were the usual hard work as I got to grips with my rules after several months of not using them. By the time I got into the second batch of tunes things were moving faster and by the final section of the battle it was all feeling much more natural. The rules written for the AWI do work well in the more European setting. Im happy enough with the tweaks to the charge/melee system that I'll probably do an update of the online version hosted on this blog, over the next couple of weeks. It is the first time in the last year or two that I've really felt motivated to game "properly" and I think the campaign structure has helped. Giving personalities to the tabletop commanders really helps in a solo environment and having a battle linked to something larger gives the impetus to play the game through to a conclusion, which I often find slips in a solo one-off scenario. Blogging about the campaign is also proving useful in keeping the momentum going, although I can't promise to provide updates every single week. Alternating game reports with the interludes makes the blogging less onerous. Clearly a game report is more time consuming, not least because the game must be played and photographed. The interludes are more flexible and can be just a few jottings or a more considered reflection on one or more aspects of the hobby that have sparked the little grey cells.
Keep your fingers crossed. I have next week off work with no grand plans, so there is a good chance of getting a decent run at the next battle. There's also those cuirassiers to paint, followed by the metal dragoons!
