Something a little different

One of the things I have incorporated when building up my AWI armies is the possibility of transporting the relevant forces to a European setting in or around the Bavarian War of Independence. I'm keen to see how my Bloodybacks! rules work for such scenarios, with more open ground and cavalry being more prominent.

As a first serious experiment I have pitched Hessian and French forces against each other on a table set-up for that staple wargames scenario, a crossroads adjoining a river crossing. I don't have many buildings in 28mm suitable for C18th Europe so don't expect too much! It is also an excuse to get the "big" river out of its box.

Here is the overview:

Two French regiments, each of two battalions are advancing on the river crossing. They are supported by two squadrons of hussars and two light artillery sections. Opposing them on this side of the river the Hessians have a regiment of fusiliers, a grenadier regiment and a half-regiment of jager. On the far side of the river they also have a second regiment of fusiliers, a small regiment of light infantry and a section of artillery emplace in a redoubt to cover the main road.

Here are more pictures of the French army:

Likewise, here are the Hessians:

Let's see how this goes...it certainly gives an extra dimension to the AWI collection.

Figures are mostly Perry with a few officers from the Foundry SYW range sculpted by Mark Copplestone.

Maybe this will inspire me to hit the lead pile and finish off the half-started Lieb Regiment and those Spanish Dragoons I bought to paint up as generic C18th cavalry to support the "European" Hessians...and buy more French to finish off the "Yorktown" regiments.
