Chatterton's Hill, 1776. Part 2

// A different approach to the 1st New York Regiment //

There is a huge value to getting figures out of their boxes when organising forces for a demonstration game. Certainly with my AWI collection as it is quite large and I can't always remember exactly what I have.

I really wasn't too convinced by the brown coated unit as the 1st NY in 1776 and I do have a unit carrying the correct flag, but I use this as the 2nd NY for the 1777 Saratoga campaign. This unit in its entirety is simply to "scruffy" to use for Chatterton's Hill as it contains a mix of 1776 and 1777 uniforms, civilian dress and hunting shirts. It is great for its intended purpose but not for the upcoming demo.

However I do have plenty of other continental regiments! So what I ave done is taken the command stand carring the 1st NY flag and combined this with rank and file stands from one of my Maryland regiments from the Guilford Courthouse OOB. This has a significant proportion of its troops in blue-coated uniforms, mixed in with a few blue hunting shirts and enough other figures to break up any uniformity.

What I got to was this:

A right old melange of figures here, using Perry continentals in hunting shirts, Perry continental command, Perry wounded and marching militia, Foundry continental command, firing line, advancing and standing, and Foundry uniformed militia standing figures. I have lots of units like this and they are way more fun to paint than units all with a single appearance. Even if this isn't quite right for the 1st NY in 1776, I do think this is a decent representation of the what Continental army looked like for much of the war., with just the coat/facing colours varying between units. Flag from GMB

I'm still not claiming this is a "spot on" representation of the 1st NY in 1776, but I feel a lot happier with this version.

// Updating the Bloodybacks! Playsheets //

In preparation for Partizan I have updated the playsheets for Bloodybacks! to include my latest tweaks and ideas, now reaching v9.3. To be clear I have not yet updated the rules page on the blog, so the two do not match 100% and these playsheets represent the most up-to-date work.

Mostly this is minor tweaks to the existing rules to add additional clarity or address situations they previously didn't deal with. They are still guidelines for playing a game and don't attempt to be comprehensive. The most significant re-working is the impetus/melee section (the third page, purple section, below). I have also tidied up morale tests so they are now more clearly either morale tests (based only on unit quality) or cohesion tests based on quality AND density.

Artillery has been subdivided into more categories. These can adapt to some degree from scenario to scenario, but briefly I'd use very light for amusettes and 2lb guns (amusettes can only shoot medium range roundshot), Light covers 3-4lb, Field is 6lb, Heavy is 12lb and Siege is 24lb. Sort of.

There are minor changes throughout, in line with my comments on the recent Viereckstal campaign, but the essential flow and mechanisms remain the same and the focus is on unit qualirt and unit density. Hopefully they handle cavalry better now!

I'll see how these go at Partizan and then I can update the rules page here so everything matches.
