Wagram 1809 at Partizan 2025

Hi all After a very long hiatus, here is a fresh blog post to describe the game I staged at Partizan in Newark a couple of weeks ago. This was a resurrection of the terrain and troops that I originally put together to recreate Wagram on its bicentennial in 2009. The troops are 6mm size from Baccus6mm with buildings from Timecast and terrain boards that I made myself from dense polystyrene covered with chinchilla sand and painted to represent generic fields and hills. The rules I used were a heavily modified version of Volley and Bayonet. The most significant modification was the grafting on of a command and control system. Parts of the latter borrowed from Sam Mustafa's Fast Play Grande Armee - mostly the table for rolling for changes of orders and the use of command points to influence this. Forces (typically corps, but some independent divisions) are allowed one of three order "stances": March allows the to manoeuvre rapidly but gives a severe disadvantage if caught in...

Further thoughts on Fireball Forward

Following on from my previous post I thought I'd offer a few comments on my approach to Fireball Forward and some house rules I used in the demo game at The Other Partizan. 1. Chits versus Cards I don't really like playing cards in tabletop games. It's a personal thing, but I find them quite intrusive even if just on the edge of the table. My preference is to use MDF tokens drawn from a bag or bowl. Luckily I have a stash of suitable ones that I bought from Great Escape Games who make them to support their Iron Cross rules. I simply put one chit per unit (with the appropriate Allied or Axis marking) in a recepticle, draw them out an line them up face-down to create the order of unit activation. As units are activated the chit used is placed next to them so that it clear who has and hasn't done anything in the turn. Updated Bloodybacks! rules for the AWI

I have revised and updated these rules and changed these on the "pages" section of the blog. So, we are now up to version 9. There are some key additions to the command and control element of the game as well as streamlining of shooting and melee. Taken together these give a faster moving game with more happening in each game turn and a little less mental load for players. The core concepts of unit quality, command quality and unit density have been retained.
