Pictures from the Cannon game

Just a few quick photos from the game of Dux Bellorum I demonstrated at the Cannon show in Retford on Sunday. I wasn't trying to take top quality pictures so these are the best of the snaps a rattled off on the day.

Quiet week on the painting front

Wrapping up one job, getting ready to start a new one next Tuesday and writing a wargames magazine article. Might be a bit slow on painting news for the next week or so. Hope to take photos on Good Friday though so keep looking...

Cannon 2013

I have just got back from Cannon in Retford, so I can say I was there at the inaugural show. My Dux Bellorum game went well and seemed popular. Shame Dave Ryan at Caliver books had forgotten to bring any copies of the rules to sell...

My purchases were limited but I was pleased to pick up some second hand foundry Arthurians from Colonel Bill's to add to the project pile. I also bought some assorted cargo bits from Ainsty for some Roman baggage elements that I am planning. Four bottles of paint from warlord will help keep me going and last of all was an impulse purchase of Neil Thomas's 19th century rule book that seems to have some good reviews and will provide some Easter reading material

The show had a great and friendly atmosphere. Being the first show and with the snow it was a bit quiet but I think the Retford club did a great job and I hope this show carries on and grows its attendance.

I'm now officially knackered so it is off to work for a rest tomorrow!

Cheers

Cannon tomorrow

I'm all ready for my demo game at tomorrow's Cannon wargames show in Retford. Lets hope the snow eases up and we'll see if Artorius Tenuous can overcome the army of Count Baldwin...

Basing session

Finally got the bases tidied up on the three most recently painted units. Actually still need to paint up the broken spears on the backs of the bases to hold casualty rings. But 99% finished!

See you at Cannon in Retford on Sunday perhaps?

More conversions...

...to form the core of my next Late Roman infantry unit. Mainly head swaps with roman heads on barbarian bodies and vice versa. I'm thinking dark green tunics this time?

Another unit for the basing session

I'll do some basing tomorrow, so to join the artillery and cataphracts here is a unit of late roman infantry with a slightly barbarian flavour. I'm quite pleased with how these have turned out so might do a second unit to match, or possibly some archers or skirmishing light infantry.

Those converted leader figures painted up nicely!

Progress and conversions

Based up the finished artillery crew. I experimented with decorating the tunics more but with this colour scheme they looked better left more plain.

I've also done some head swaps. A couple of artillery figures now have gothic heads and the roman heads have found some Germanic bodies. These will be used to put together some regular roman unit recruited from gothic tribes as I start to give my army a progressively more 4th century "look".

Some progress

I managed to get the shields more or less done for the artillery crew, painted the flesh and a few other jobs. Might get the painting finished tonight but I do have parents evening at my daughters' school so Thursday might be more likely. Then I'll need to finish the basing in these and the Ostrogoth cataphracts.

Next week will be either another light catapult unit maybe with some gothic head swaps, or some unarmoured gothic foot, or possibly a unit of late roman cavalry. I'll see what takes my fancy.

The Cannon show in Retford is coming up soon so I need to decide if I'll need some vignettes for that. Also need to sort out a scenario :-)

Heavy Artillery WIP

Beginning to come together but plenty to do yet.

Weekend bits and bobs

Some random stuff. I have repaired or replaced standards and spears on my Saxon nobles and some late roman cavalry who may look familiar from the AoA Warhammer Historical book. I've also started to base up my Ostrogoth/eastern roman cataphracts/noble unit and begun the process of painting up a big ballista which will involve some repainting and some new painting. This might be useful if I need to attack that hill fort.

Catapults done

Finished. These have come out pretty well I think. I've never tried stringing bows etc before and have learned a few things along the way. I'm glad I did the extra shields and figures to fill out the base.

Today will be mostly about repairing existing bases; replacing lost spears etc. then the rugby, cheering for the men in red.

Cheers

Romans vs Picts

Had a cracking game of Dux Bellorum last night at the wild geese club in Nottingham. James brought along his Picts newly housed on some lovely sabot bases and I fielded Late Romans.
We both went fairly light. James had mounted companions and a unit of mounted nobles supported by three ordinary warbands, some light cavalry and two units of skirmishers with bows as well as taking the javelin social rule and two extra LPs. I had mounted companions too, mounted nobles, two ordinary riders, one noble and one ordinary Shieldwall and a skirmisher force of one foot with javelins, one foot with bows, mounted with javelin and mounted with bows. I also had one extra LP.

The battle had a lot of ups and downs, swinging one way and then the other. My planned right hook should have worked when I sent companions, mounted nobles and riders into James's flank guard of mounted nobles x1 and warriors x1. Unfortunately it did not go well and was crowned by James getting five 6s on nine dice to kill my companions and reduce me to zero LPs! My leaderless army just about held on however, with my Shieldwall intercepting the Pictish companions. My turn for the luck then came with some outrageously good shooting from the skirmishers and we soon had units on each side dropping like flies. My losses reached 50% but most units passed their morale checks and finally ground down the Picts who dropped below 75% and fled the field.
Having lost my general early I think this was a very narrow escape bit it did make for a great game. The one thing losing the big cheese did was to free me from the worry of losing units and LPs and just getting things stuck in.

But, FIVE 6s on nine dice! C'mon :-)

Cheers

Catapaults WIP 2

Glued to the base, shields finished etc.

Catapaults WIP

Progressing nicely with figures for a unit of light artillery to expand Dux Bellorum with some house rules.

The shields will be painted to match those of the skirmishers I finished a few weeks ago. I'm pleased with the little stand of spears and shields I knocked together. I think this and the extra figures will help to fill the base out more fully than just 2 machines and 4 crew.

These wont be finished for Thursdays game but should be done for the weekend when I can also finish off those Gothic cataphracts.

Painting plan for March and beyond

Foundry order arrived today so I have been cleaning up and priming as well as raiding the bits box. Planned units are:

1 x Ostrogoth cataphracts
1 x gothic themed roman unit
1 x late roman catapult base
1 x late roman catapult base with a more gothic or Romano-British look to it
1 x archer unit with a mix of roman and gothic figures probably painted to match the Romano-gothic unit above
1 x gothic light cavalry
3-5 units of gothic warriors

Lastly either a unit of late roman cavalry or a unit of light cavalry and a command vignette- or possibly something clever with vignette dropping into a unit...

Cataphracts and catapults first I think

Cheers

Green Goths

Base more or less finished. Glue needs to dry and spear for casualty rings needs highlighting.

The base has a couple of conversions. The leader started as a very old Viking figure from the initial releases by Gripping Beast. He has a head swap and some hair made from millionth because I could not for the life of me find any of the greenstuff that I know I have. The second is the chap on the edge of the base swinging his throwing axe. He started as a late roman chucking a dart. I lopped off the head and an arm which were replaced with more gothic-ish alternatives. The area around his throat is a bit messy but I am a better painter than sculptor and I think I just about got away with it!

Conversions are a good way of taking useful bits from the occasional sculpt you don't like to refresh the ones that are good but would otherwise be a bit repetitive in a non-uniformed, non-drilled army. Just know where you greenstuff is!

Cheers

Gothic thoughts

I was browsing the Beeston Bookshop at lunchtime on Wednesday when I happened upon the book pictured. It concerns the Battle of Adrianople and as this ties in with the Late Roman and Goth painting I've been up to I thought I'd give it a whirl, especially as it was reduced to £4.

So far it I like it. The overview of the C4th empire seems balanced and is presented very clearly. I'll let you know how it develops.

The next unit of Goths is just about done and will get its static grass later so stand by for photos. Next after this is probably a unit of non-noble Goths to begin to build up the ranks.

As it is my birthday soon, and I'll be 21 twice I have treated myself to a Foundry order. A mix of late roman, gothic and sarmatian cavalry figures to cobble into some bases of Ostrogoth heavy cavalry and generic Gothic light horse and possibly an extra unit of roman cavalry. I've also ordered some Late Roman catapults although the actual equipment might be replaced by the gripping beast ones I have lurking around but which have crew figures that are a bit bigger than the foundry stuff. I find it hard to mix the two together although Arfur's knights are GB as is my Saxon army. I think the difference shows less in tightly packed bases but sticks out for skirmishers and crews a lot more. Anyway that lot should be here in the next few days!

Cheers
